This is a marvellous Japanese advertisement for a Nokia phone that has a case made from wood.

In the video a wooden ball falls down an engineered slope made of wooden blocks to play out a Bach piece in an idyllic forest surrounding.

It’s well worth watching this elegiac video in full-screen mode.

I just saw Janelle Monáe in concert, and it was one of the best gigs I’ve had the pleasure to attend.

This is the outstanding, inspirational Sister Rosetta Tharpe on the far left of the photo. The first superstar gospel singer in 1930s and 1940s America who played a mean electric guitar.

In the photo with Rosetta, admiring her talent, are Hot Lips Page, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and J.C. Higginbotham.

The trend for jewelled skeletons began in the late 16th century. The Roman catacombs, which had been abandoned as burial sites and largely forgotten about, were rediscovered in 1578 by vineyard workers. This coincided with the initial phase of the Counter-Reformation; the Council of Trent, called to formulate the Catholic response to the Protestant Reformation, had just concluded, and one of the areas of concern was affirming the efficacy and belief in relics against attacks by their detract ors. Since the remains in the catacombs dated from the second to fifth centuries AD, it was possible, with a bit of wishful thinking, for Church leaders to romant icise the bones as belonging to almost any famed early Christian saint or martyr. In the newfound cache they saw a potential tool to bolster their supply of relics and promote their power.

I love the atmosphere of this shot. There was a mixup in settings on the camera, and this shot is better in B&W as a result. I think it works.

Don’t worry, the kids’s parents are off-screen. He’s not alone, though at this moment, I don’t think he cares.

From my recent blog post on the on-going reaction to DC’s reboot this autumn:

It’s quite hilarious really. DC says its reboot is about getting new readers for a shrinking market, and all it does is chase after the mythical boy reader that it’s been courting to years, which research has shown is increasingly disenchanted by what DC is offering.

This is the kind of uninspired strategy that comes out of the mouths of movie executives, which should point to the fact that DC is really at the beck and call of Warner Bros, and is part of a media conglomerate which has a track record of ignoring and marginalising women and minorities.

It’s the DC Mad Hatter tea party. They call for change and everyone moves around the table but nobody new is invited.

They’re feasting off the same stale crumbs and dank tea.

I think we should leave them to their empty banquet.

The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it: ‘No room! No room!’ they cried out when they saw Alice coming. ‘There’s plenty of room!’ said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large arm-chair at one end of the table.

‘Have some wine,’ the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.

Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. ‘I don’t see any wine,’ she remarked.

‘There isn’t any,’ said the March Hare.

‘Then it wasn’t very civil of you to offer it,’ said Alice angrily.

‘It wasn’t very civil of you to sit down without being invited,’ said the March Hare.

‘I didn’t know it was your table,’ said Alice; ‘it’s laid for a great many more than three.’
